Meet Our Blended, Neurodivergent Family
Share
Hey there, fellow adventurers in the land of parenting! Welcome to our little corner of the internet. Buckle up, because we're about to take you on a whirlwind tour of our beautifully messy, wonderfully chaotic, and absolutely neurodivergent family life.
Meet the Crew
We're a blended family with six kids under the age of 10. Yes, you read that right—six miniature humans running around, each with their own unique quirks and superpowers. Our medicine cabinet looks like a pharmacy exploded, stocked with enough ADHD meds to make the FDA do a double take.
Our daily vocabulary includes a delightful array of acronyms: ADHD, Bipolar Disorder, RAD, PTSD, Learning Disabilities, Auditory Processing Disorder, Anxiety, and Chronic Depression. If it sounds like alphabet soup, welcome to the club! When we say we're a neurodivergent household, we mean it in every sense.
The Struggle Bus (And We're Driving It)
If you've ever tried parenting neurodivergent kids, you know that one size fits all... doesn't. We've tried every trick in the book—star charts, sticker charts, bribes (no judgment, please), and more pep talks than we can count. But nothing seemed to stick. Chores became a battleground, and honestly, we were losing. Badly.
I could bang my head against the wall and yell until I'm blue in the face (and trust me, I've come close), but the chores remained undone, and the household remained in a state of perpetual chaos.
Not-So-Little Soldiers
In an ideal world, our kids would march in lockstep through their chores like disciplined little soldiers. But let's be real—that's about as likely as me finding a clean pair of socks on laundry day. Between battles with hostile co-parents, medical appointments, and enough mental health diagnoses to start our own support group, forcing these kids to do anything felt like trying to herd cats.
A Glimmer of Hope
We refused to let our children fall into a world of entitlement. While we pick our battles (wearing a superhero cape to the grocery store? Sure.), we still set clear expectations. But when the house started to resemble a warzone, we knew we had to up our game.
That's when we decided to think outside the box and find a new way to empower our kids—and maybe, just maybe, make chore time something they'd actually look forward to.
Stay Tuned
Curious about what we came up with? Spoiler alert: it involves a little creativity, a lot of coffee, and a rogue Lego that nearly broke me (more on that next time).
We're excited to share more about our journey, the challenges we've faced, and the (often hilarious) lessons we've learned along the way.
Let's Chat
We'd love to hear from you! Do you have creative strategies for managing chores or motivating kids? Got any hilarious parenting fails that make ours look tame? Drop your stories in the comments below. Let's build a community where we can laugh, cry, and support each other through this wild ride called parenting.
Until then, keep fighting the good fight!
P.S. Remember, the goal isn't perfection—it's progress. And maybe a hot cup of coffee before it gets cold.
